The best action in the whole 20 mile run was the South Fork Gorge. At 4,200cfs, the run is continuous whitewater and a swim would be a long one. There aren’t many hazards here, and the rocks are pretty deep at this level. The The lollipop tree on top of the hill signals the canyon entrance.
The rapids through the canyon have names like Haystack Canyon, Lost Hat, Satan’s Cesspool, and Hospital Bar. They all ran together at the high flow, but they were lots of fun. It was all read and run and none of it was steep enough to not be able to clearly see the lines before it was too late.
At the end of the run, hitching shuttle was a dream. We walked out on the road, still in all our gear and carrying our boats and both got picked up with our gear by the third car. This ride took us up from Salmon Falls Road to Hwy 49. From this intersection, Paul got picked up and taken all the way to Chili Bar within 5 minutes. While I was bored waiting for him, I thought I would take a self portrait with my camera’s timer, entitled, “Jonathan bored waiting for shuttle.” If you look carefully at this picture, that is my Subaru coming up. About 3 seconds later Paul came within inches of running over my camera with my car.
