Paul Gamache and I started the morning late after a long night of drinking with the Ashland Mine Productions guys in Mt Shasta. (Ben Stookesburry, Andrew, Garren, ect..) We woke up to 2 inches fresh snow, and more coming down. We were stoked on the first day of our spring break paddling adventure, and were ready to go to the Sacramento River.
We started in the small metropolis of Dunsmuir, putting in at the Tauhindauli Park, near downtown. The park has good river access and parking. This starch of the Sac is pretty mellow, cruising through the town, next to factories and along houses.
There were lots of man-made riverbanks and rock pilings with rebar in the run. It was very reminiscent of the Tieton in terms of size, flow, and roadside-ness. There were no real notable rapids or hazards. It was fairly continuous class II with small bits up to III. We continued down from Castle Crags to the next section, Maers Falls. To get here, from I-5 northbound, take exit 732 Dunsmuir Ave and take a left. Follow the road down to the park/ boat access (next to Chevron) and follow down to river put in. From I-5 Southbound, take exit 730 to Central Dunsmuir and follow directions from Chevron.
